Subsea Control Systems

Offering support services for established control systems in the offshore energy industry, we do not manufacture complete subsea control systems but provide diagnostics, spares, repairs and refurbishment solutions within support service agreements.

Using our long experience in naval defence applications, we design and manufacture a range of equipment for subsea control systems. We can adapt these basic designs to suit your application

Electrical Distribution Box

Our EDB comes in a range of sizes and configurations. It has been fully tested and qualified for use in mission critical applications. The two basic configuration option are: a one atmosphere dry internal housing with oil filled pressure compensation external, and fully oil filled, pressure compensated, with novel internal compensating piston arrangement.

Inductive Coupler

We manufacture inductive couplers which have been widely used over the years in the offshore industry, and provide a quick-connect highly reliable connection for signal and power applications.

Jumpers

We manufacture electrical “jumper” cable assemblies. These jumpers can range in length from 1 metre to hundreds of metres and provide the power and communications between the various control system components on the seabed. Jumpers are manufactured to high standards and undergo rigourous QA checks including hyperbaric testing, insulation / resistance measurement, and helium leak testing. We are also able to supply hydraulic and electro-hydraulic jumper assemblies.

Cable Termination

Subsea cables are often required to withstand considerable loads, and this includes the connection between the cable and the equipment. The design of the termination is therefore critical. We design terminations for steel armour braided and kevlar umbilicals. These terminations can be designed for diver or ROV operations.

Composite Cable Connectivity Solution

J+S were asked to investigate a connection solution for the EMEC (European Marine Energy Centre) wave & tidal test facility in Orkney, and propose a solution.  In place are nine cables, five on the wave site and four on the tidal site.  These cables are in place to allow the connection of devices to generate electricity harnessing the natural resource of the strong tidal and wave conditions experienced in Orkney.

Through careful evaluation of the site, and utilising many years experience in subsea connection within the military and oil and gas marketplace, J+S have designed and manufactured a robust solution running at 11kV, with fibre optic facility.  The device manufacturers can easily connect to the cables, test them prior to use, and constantly monitor the performance of the device as well as export power directly to the grid through the J+S termination and the EMEC facility.  J+S has further developed this product to meet the future requirements of the Marine Renewables Industry as it progress' toward the 33kV, and has upscaled the device accordingly.  The robust structure has been designed to be installed in the harsh environments and withstand the rigors of the sea.  The connection/termination through a concise service and maintenance programme is designed and manufactured for a 25 year life.
